For many people, summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and explore what nature has to offer. But in humid, often-rainy Hong Kong, locals and visitors are more likely to seek out some air conditioning as sweltering summer temperatures grip the city. However, it doesn’t have to be this way! Although it’s probably not advisable going hiking in the mountains under the mid-day sun, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy other outdoor activities. If you are prepared to brave the heat a little, you just might find that Hong Kong has a lot to offer.

Hit the beach

What better way to cool off than taking a dip in the ocean? And in Hong Kong, that’s very easy thanks to the city’s 42 gazetted public beaches. Whether you fancy going for an invigorating swim, relaxing under a beach umbrella and catching up on a good book, or simply enjoying a spectacular sunset with loved ones, there are so many locations to choose from.

Many of Hong Kong’s beaches have barbeque facilities, with some even being home to a selection of restaurants. So enjoying a beach-side meal with the family is usually possible. Also, most gazetted beaches have life guards to keep you safe. But even still, exercise caution if taking to the water. Stick to swimming inside the shark net and don’t go swimming if there isn’t a lifeguard on duty.

Get wet and wild

With its wealth of islands, sheltered bays, coves, beaches and rocky promontories, Hong Kong’s geography makes it the ideal place to enjoy a range of water sports. Popular activities include windsurfing, particularly in the picturesque town of Stanley and the fascinating island of Cheung Chau. Kayaking, too, is in much demand with visitors and local enthusiasts alike. Bodyboarding, which is akin to surfing, is also a go-too activity for adrenaline junkies, with many taking to the roaring waves that pound Lantau’s Cheung Sha beach. And if those activities are too adventurous, why not marvel at the city’s marine life in a glass bottomed boat at Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park!

If you are hiring equipment, or taking a tour, remember to only engage with a reputable vendor or operator. And don’t forget to wear plenty of sunscreen, even on an overcast day.

Seek out night-time views

Hong Kong is renowned for its hiking trails, but in the heat of a scorching summer’s day, setting off for a long, challenging walk somehow loses its appeal! Thankfully, the city is blessed with a choice of routes that are perfect for tackling at night when temperatures are cooler. And in many ways, night-time walking gives a completely new perspective on the city without losing the wow-factor.

On a clear evening, Victoria Peak will reveal truly iconic views of the city below. The best thing is you don’t even need to hike up if you don’t want to; simply take the Peak Tram or another method of public transport and treat yourself to the visual feast. For the fit, a walk along Sir Cecil’s Ride to Braemar Hill offers some of the most spectacular scenes of the harbour to be found anywhere. Another option is exploring the new Round-the-Island Trail. In particular, the low-level stretch from Kennedy Town to Sai Wan Ho offers incredible harbour views without being too demanding on your legs.

Despite its punishing summer temperatures, Hong Kong has so much to offer if you choose the right activity for the conditions. But there are a few key things to remember. Always ensure you have enough water available as dehydration can set in quickly. Likewise, wear sunblock and seek the shade if you are feeling unwell. If you are out on the water, wearing a life vest should be mandatory.

Another thing to consider is that, during any outdoor activity, accidents can happen without warning. So make sure you are fully prepared for any eventuality by taking out appropriate insurance. MSIG’s personal accident insurance provides coverage for injuries resulting from common sports activities like running, hiking, as well as high-risk activities such as water skiing.  With this protection, you can enjoy your summer activities with complete peace of mind.
