Protect yourself financially from violent crime in Hong Kong

Crime is something that can affect any one of us at any point in our lives. Whether it’s financial, as with the recent phone scams in Hong Kong, or nuisance crimes like on-board thefts from baggage in overhead lockers on aircraft, all crime can be traumatic for the victims and potentially for their families as well. Financial loss is one aspect of the crime, and this can be terrible to endure, but the psychological impact of being an innocent victim of someone else’s nefarious scheme can be equally devastating.

There is one category of crime, however, that no-one wants to fall victim to: violent crime. Violent crimes encompass a range of offences, but include murder, robbery, assault and sexual crimes. In 2023, violent crime in Hong Kong increased by 14.6% compared with 2022, and this included robbery and blackmail. According to data provided by the government, between January and June this year, violent crime was up by 8.3% compared with the same period in 2023, with a total of 5,156 violent crimes recorded.

While this may send alarm bells ringing, it should be stressed that, on the whole, Hong Kong isn’t a dangerous place. In a recent survey, Hong Kong was ranked as one of the world’s safest cities, coming 13th in in a list of 60 locations. In our day to day lives here, violent crime, thankfully, remains rare.

Give yourself the best protection

With crime on the rise, though, it’s sensible to factor in the risk of becoming the victim. And if you are the victim of a violent crime, there could be implications for your financial situation. For example, what if you were caught up in a robbery while out shopping and were unfortunate enough to get stabbed – you, a hapless, innocent bystander otherwise completely unconnected to the drama unfolding before you? And what if your recovery in hospital was long and arduous? The financial burden on you and your loved ones could, in time, become severe – perhaps seriously affecting you and your family’s quality of life.

That’s why making sure that you have adequate personal accident insurance can help shoulder some of the financial burden as you focus on recovery. MSIG’s Personal Protector 3.0 offers optional double indemnity for medical expenses if you are injured in a robbery, up to HK$300,000. The plan also provides a hospital allowance of HK$500 a week, for up to 52 weeks in total, should your injuries require a lengthy stay in a Hong Kong hospital.

Of course, some of the best protection against falling victim to violent crime is to exercise caution and always remain aware of your surroundings. And, in Hong Kong, despite the rise in crime figures, the chances of you falling prey to violent criminals is lower than in some other cities around the world. So give yourself the best chance by minimising your risks. Always be prepared, and stay safe.
