Pickleball injuries: Is your Accident Insurance cover enough?

In recent years, pickleball has become one of Hong Kong’s fastest-growing sports. With simple rules, a moderate level of physical activity, and both indoor and outdoor venues widely available, it appeals to people of all ages. However, like any sport, pickleball carries a risk of injury. A moment of misjudgement can affect your daily life and lead to unexpected medical expenses. When accidents happen, what protection can Accident Insurance provide?
Common pickleball injuries
Many people assume that pickleball is easy to learn and less physically demanding than other racket sports, and therefore underestimate the risk of injury. In reality, the sport involves short bursts of movement, sudden stops, quick changes of direction and repetitive swinging motions. Without proper warm-up, correct technique or a gradual increase in activity levels, these movements can place added strain on muscles and joints.
For beginners, poor striking technique when returning the ball can place extra stress on the arms and wrists. Frequent overhead shots and repeated swinging may also lead to shoulder muscle fatigue, while rapid movements and changes of direction can increase the risk of ankle sprains or leg strains. In addition, repeatedly using the same muscles and joints may cause discomfort to build up over time. If pain persists after exercise, it should not simply be dismissed as normal muscle soreness.
What does accident insurance cover?
The costs of a sports injury often extend beyond the initial medical consultation. During recovery, expenses may also arise from follow-up consultations, physiotherapy, traditional bone-setting treatment or chiropractic care.
In general, Accident Insurance provides cover for bodily injuries caused by an accident. Depending on the policy terms, benefits may include reimbursement of medical expenses, hospital cash benefits, accidental death benefits and permanent disability benefits. Some plans may also cover follow-up treatment costs, helping to ease the financial burden arising from an unexpected accident.
For example, Mr Chan was playing pickleball with friends after work when he accidentally collided heavily with a teammate and was knocked into a metal support frame beside the court. As a result, he suffered a fractured tibia in his right leg and related complications, requiring a two-week stay in hospital. After being discharged, his doctor recommended physiotherapy to support his recovery. Mr Chan subsequently submitted a claim to his insurer for expenses arising from the accident, including medical costs, two weeks of hospital cash benefits, five physiotherapy sessions and compensation for damaged sportswear. He eventually received compensation of approximately HK$13,500.
This case demonstrates how a single sports-related accident can result in a range of unexpected expenses. Appropriate accident insurance can help ease the financial impact when such incidents occur.
In addition to core protection, some Accident Insurance plans offer a range of additional benefits, such as 24-hour emergency assistance services, extra compensation for accidental death while travelling on public transport, and cover for reconstructive or cosmetic surgery required as a result of an accident. Some products also offer no-claim rewards, under which policyholders who meet the required conditions may receive additional accidental death or permanent disability cover when renewing their policies.
Some insurers also provide Accident Insurance plans specifically designed for children and seniors, offering additional protection based on the needs of different age groups. For example, children's plans may cover injuries sustained during school activities and provide compensation if a parent needs to take leave from work to care for a hospitalised insured child. Senior plans may include benefits for fractures or prosthetic devices, helping to address the changing protection needs of family members at different stages of life.
However, when taking out Accident Insurance, it is important not only to understand what is covered but also to be aware of policy exclusions. For example, some policies may not cover injuries sustained while participating in competitions, practice sessions or training as a professional or amateur athlete. It is therefore advisable to review the policy terms and conditions carefully before purchasing cover.
Be prepared and reduce the risk of injury
While Accident Insurance can help cover medical expenses following an accident, prevention remains the first line of defence. To reduce the risk of sports injuries, proper warm-up, suitable equipment and adequate rest are all essential.
Before playing, it is advisable to spend 5 to 10 minutes on dynamic warm-up exercises such as arm circles, shoulder rotations, lunges and torso twists. These exercises help muscles and joints gradually adapt to the intensity of physical activity. Players should also wear shoes that provide adequate support and choose a paddle with an appropriate weight and grip size to minimise strain on muscles and joints. If persistent pain or joint discomfort develops after exercise, it is important not to push through the pain. Taking time to rest and seeking medical advice promptly can help prevent injuries from becoming more serious.
Pickleball may be simple to learn, but being easy to pick up does not mean it is free from the risk of injury. Alongside taking sensible precautions, it is also worth reviewing whether your accident insurance provides adequate protection. Being financially prepared for unexpected medical expenses can help you enjoy the game with greater peace of mind.
