Make the most of your trip to the World Cup this summer
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off, and many people from Hong Kong will be booking trips to North America to watch their favourite teams compete for football’s highest accolade. The tournament, which lasts until the final on 19 July, is being played across three countries: Canada, the USA and Mexico, all of which have different entry requirements for visitors. So if you are planning to catch the action live in any of the three countries, you should ensure you have prepared everything beforehand so that your sporting trip of a lifetime is worry free.
Here, we’ve gathered some helpful tips so that you can give your full attention to the “beautiful game” at the World Cup this summer.
What about visas?
OK, so you’ve got your match ticket, and secured accommodation and flights. But do you meet the correct entry requirements for your destination in North America? The good news is that, for Hong Kong passport holders, Mexico requires no visa and Hong Kong passport holders can enjoy a stay of up to 90 days for tourism, transit or business purposes. For Canada, the process is almost as straightforward in as far as you don’t need a visitor visa, but you will have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). When it comes to the USA, however, you will have to apply for a valid visitor visa if you hold a Hong Kong passport. So don’t get caught out – check before you book your trip.
If you are unsure, always check official government websites. Further information can also be found on the Hong Kong Government’s website. If you hold a passport other than one issued by the Hong Kong SAR Government, please check your home country’s official travel advice regarding entry requirements.
Staying safe on the ground
Whenever you are abroad, it almost goes without saying that you should pay close attention to your surroundings to ensure your personal safety. But during the World Cup, this is especially important because of the sheer number of people in attendance. Unfortunately football does attract hooliganism, so if at any point it looks like trouble is brewing between groups of fans, you should vacate the area, or follow the advice of local law enforcement. Similarly, if you choose to consume alcohol, do so in a responsible manner and ensure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It’s summer after all, and the weather if likely to be very hot!
Securing travel insurance
For anyone heading to the football this summer, whether in Canada, the USA or Mexico, buying travel insurance before you depart can be critical to your safety and well-being. In a chaotic environment, such as an international soccer competition, opportunities for things to go wrong multiply. Whether you need protection against lost or damaged mobile phones, tablets and laptops, or coverage for large medical expenses incurred should you befall an accident, travel insurance is one essential you shouldn’t skip. MSIG’s iTravel Go plans also offers financial protection should you have to cancel your trip to the World Cup for any reason, giving you even greater peace of mind.
