Studying overseas this January? Here are 5 things you need to know

Most people who choose to study abroad overwhelmingly have positive experiences. It is a time for discovering the real you and making the most of opportunities in a completely new environment – one where, most likely, you’ll create memories that last a lifetime.
Sometimes, however, events don’t always go to plan. Finding yourself alone in a foreign country without the support of family can be disorientating. So we’ve compiled a list of things you should consider before studying overseas to make your journey of self-discovery as smooth as possible.
Do some research before you go
This might sound all-too obvious, but while you’ve been busy getting your course and accommodation sorted, it’s sometimes easy to forget other important details. Check about the weather in your new city – does it have pronounced seasons and will you need cold-weather clothing if you’re starting your studies this winter? If you’re going to Europe or North America, then that’s a definite yes. Also, it’s worth checking about dining options. There’s nothing like a home-cooked meal but, failing that, are there restaurants that serve the comfort food from home that you love? And perhaps most importantly, you should find out who to call in case of a medical or other emergency.
Learn the lingo
If you’re going abroad to study in an Anglophone country, such as Australia or Canada, you are unlikely to have much of an issue when it comes to communicating with the locals. But if you are spending some time in Paris, for example, then it definitely pays to learn a few phrases of French. We’re not saying you have to be fluent, but knowing some of the local language will make your day to day interactions much easier.
Make a budget and stick to it
Money management is an important life skill, and it really comes into play when living in a foreign country. Adapting to your host country’s cost of living can be tricky at first, so create a budget to help you through the first few months. There is a range of handy tools available online to help you manage your money, so do check those out. Another reason to be careful with your cash is that you might encounter sudden expenses, such as large medical bills in the case of an accident. So it’s important to stay on top of your budget while studying overseas.
Make friends!
Immersing yourself in a different culture can be a daunting experience – and also a lonely one for some people. Reach out to other students in your halls of residence, speak to your new neighbours – even if there’s a language barrier at first. Also, check out some of the societies and clubs you can join where you’ll be able to connect with likeminded individuals.
Get insured
One must-have when studying abroad is appropriate insurance to protect you and your valuables. In the first few weeks of the semester when you are still finding your feet, it’s easy to misplace your personal belongings, such as mobile phones or other electronic devices. And, unfortunately, sometimes items are stolen. MSIG’s Overseas Study Insurance covers the loss of or damage to personal baggage and belongings including mobile phone or tablet computer up to HK$20,000 and medical expenses up to HK$1,000,000. So take out an insurance policy that gives you peace of mind so you can focus on the next exciting chapter in your life.
