How to make solid plans for your child’s overseas studies?
For many young people, exams are one of the least enjoyable parts of the school calendar. Exams equal stress. There’s a lot to remember. And, often, a lot riding on their performance – such as where they will study at university. But there are those budding young scholars in Hong Kong who thrive academically under pressure, and who go on to study at world-class institutions at home or abroad. Arguably, it seems students are doing better than ever. This year, a record 24 students from 15 schools achieved perfect results in the 2026 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE)*, which marked an increase of pupils gaining such a score for the second year in a row.
Undoubtedly, this year’s DSE results are a huge achievement and are shining testimony to students’ hard work and determination. But often the pressure doesn’t end there. If your daughter or son is planning to attend university abroad, there are still many elements to arrange before they set off on the next chapter of their life. This doesn’t just mean ensuring they have applied for the correct visa or have received a solid offer from their university of choice. There are several important steps that you, as a parent, should take long before they sit their final school exams.
Ensuring stability
One of the best things you can do to prepare your child for studying abroad is to make a financial plan that will see them through the duration of their studies. When creating such a plan, you might want to consider calculating all their costs, including tuition fees, accommodation costs, living allowance, cost of study materials, electronic equipment and more. Will you have enough funds available to cope with an emergency, for example? Or what about fluctuations in exchange rates between the Hong Kong dollar and the host country’s currency? By making a solid plan at least a year in advance, you can alleviate much of the stress associated with worrying about your child’s wellbeing, safe in the knowledge they are at least financially secure.
Although we mentioned visas earlier, it is particularly important to ensure you have applied for the correct study visa for your child, particularly during times of continued geopolitical uncertainty. Don’t leave the application too late and ensure you comply with any potential new requirements as stipulated by the host country.
Protection when it matters most
Another essential is insurance. In fact, for most countries, this is a mandatory requirement. When choosing an overseas study insurance plan for your child, the obvious things to consider are things like personal accident and personal belongings protection, as well as coverage for medical expenses and hospitalisation, or even if their studies are interrupted or cancelled altogether.
But it is also worth considering overseas study insurance that goes further, such as coverage for amateur dangerous sports, including winter sports, horse riding, water skiing and scuba diving. By ensuring adequate insurance coverage, you will be protecting your child’s goals and empowering their future.
