Why frequent travellers should prepare for all situations

As the pandemic continues to recede, business and frequent travellers are once again taking to the skies to visit colleagues, partners, families and clients around the world.
While this is a welcome return to normality for many, it once again means that frequent travellers are exposed to the old irritations of flight cancellations, or of having to pay to rearrange trips if problems occur, such as extreme weather events or even terrorism threats.
For most people, the tendency is to purchase individual travel insurance cover for each trip – which is fine if you are only going abroad once or twice a year. If, however, you are a frequent traveller for reasons of business or lifestyle, it may be more convenient if you choose an insurance plan specifically designed for those who live life in the skies.
Such plans generally offer year-round protection against unfortunate accidents and or situations where you could be affected financially. In this piece, we look at how our annual travel insurance plans can offer financial support in some hypothetical – but quite plausible – scenarios.
Trip cancelled due to airport closure
Mr Chan and his partner are due to fly to Tokyo for a long weekend from Hong Kong International Airport during the summer. However, a huge typhoon has been edging closer to Hong Kong for several days and is due to make landfall on the day of their departure and the airport is closed. Mr Chan decides to cancel the trip. However, his hotel room was unable to be cancelled. Luckily, Mr Chan is protected under his annual travel insurance plan which covers the cost of his hotel.
Trip rearrangement due to industrial action
At the end of a visit her son in Paris, Mrs Leung waiting for her car to take her to Charles de Gaulle Airport for her flight home to Hong Kong. However, that morning an industrial strike gets underway among the city’s airport by transport workers. As a result, flights are all cancelled for two days and Mrs Leung is forced to seek additional accommodation for the duration of the strike. Mrs Leung purchased our annual travel insurance before she left, which covers her accommodation costs. She waits in comfort for the strike to finish before she finally takes her flight home.
Preparing for the unknown
We all live in difficult times and inhabit a world where the future is much harder to predict. Since the pandemic, geopolitics have become polarised and certain regions around the globe have become unstable, exposing frequent travellers to more risks than ever before. However, for reasons of business, family, cultural connections and more, some frequent travellers are required to visit countries and territories where security threat levels can change quickly. Our annual travel insurance plans protect you if a Black Alert or a Red Alert is raised under Hong Kong’s Outbound Travel Alert System, giving you total peace of mind no matter where you are going.
